I’m going to be doing something here that I am pretty good at – talking a lot about things I know a little bit about.
Let me be clear: I am not an expert about anything I’ll be talking about here, and that’s the point. I have been a huge nerd for as long as I can remember. I played a lot of Magic: the Gathering, played video games when that was still something you’d get beaten up for, read mostly sci-fi and fantasy, and have a never-ending interest in all things science and technology.
I know a little about a lot of things, and my goal is to learn more about many of them. It may be presumptuous but I don’t think I am alone, especially when it comes to the many different parts of nerd culture.
A few examples of what I’m talking about:
- I love the MCU and am hopeful that the DCEU will get its shit together, but I have read very few comics. I will be diving a little deeper into some of my favorite movie and TV moments.
- I will dig a bit into the world building around some of my favorite fantasy game settings – from Azeroth to Dominaria, Hyrule to Outland and everything in between.
- There is so much going on in the way of new technology that it’s hard to keep up. I would like to do a better job of it, and this will give me an excuse to do so! Self-serving, perhaps, but it is my hope that we can learn together.
- I also plan to carve out some space in these pages for nerding out about topics not generally considered nerdy: education, gardening, parenting, cooking … look. There is an endless list of topics I would like to talk about with you.
So that is a non-comprehensive list of the What but now Why?
- It is my sincere hope that this will be a journey that I am not undertaking alone. There is space in this for conversation. The online realms of nerddom tend to be overly harsh if you’re not walking in the door with a full satchel of knowledge. I would like this to be a way for all of us to help each other out.
- My interests are so varied that it was impossible for me to narrow it down. That they all skewed toward the nerdy was a connecting factor so I decided to roll with it.
I don’t know what the final form of this blog will be. I do know that it needs to start somewhere, and here is where we are starting. Let’s learn something together!
