About Casual Nerdery
I know a little bit about a lot of things.
That was the basic idea behind Casual Nerdery when I started it, and honestly, it still fits pretty well. Nerding out (casually) without making it pretentious or a second job.
I’m Dan. I’m a teacher, a lifelong gamer, and the kind of person who can lose an unreasonable amount of time thinking about an NES game from 1989, a detail from an MCU movie, or some completely unnecessary bit of nerd trivia.
Casual Nerdery is where I put some of that energy.
There isn’t really one neat category that covers everything here. Retro gaming has become a big part of the site, especially the NES games I grew up with, but you’ll also find Marvel, gaming guides, and whatever else I happen to be interested in enough to write about.
The goal isn’t to be the definitive authority on everything I cover. There are plenty of sites much better suited for that.
This is more like the conversation you have with somebody who says, “Remember that game?” and suddenly you’re twenty minutes into talking about why Crystalis was ahead of its time or which NES boss made you want to throw the controller across the room.
Then GradeMaster happened
Casual Nerdery also became the home of GradeMaster, a free grade calculator I built for teachers.
That started because I wanted a simple tool that worked the way I wanted it to. Eventually I figured other teachers might find it useful too, so now it has its own corner of the site alongside all the games and nerd stuff.
Apparently building apps also counts as something I nerd out about now.
So what will you find here?
Probably some combination of:
- Retro gaming, rankings, reviews, and nostalgia
- MCU thoughts, theories, and occasional deep dives
- Gaming guides, tips and tricks
- GradeMaster and teacher-related projects
- Whatever else manages to hold my attention long enough for me to write about it
Some posts are researched guides. Some are rankings. Some are basically me explaining why something from thirty years ago is still really cool.
That’s kind of the point.
I don’t know that Casual Nerdery needs to become one perfectly defined thing. I’d rather keep writing about things I genuinely enjoy than manufacture content because I’m supposed to stay inside a particular niche.
